SHORT RECITAL:

The Union have been demanding for some time employment of additional workmen on permanent rolls, considering that the area under tea and the crop has increased substantially since 1978. They also pointed out that area gardens are employing a much larger number of temporary workers to cope with the increased leaf harvested. Management of temporary workers arising due to change in the cultural practices, technological changed, longer period of harvesting,  the extent of absenteeism etc. in the tea gardens. While reteraing their stand that the demand for employment of labour on the basis of land-labour of crop-labour ratio is not acceptable, the employers indicated their willingness to offer permanent employment to a certain number of persons on an adhoc basis, Following a series of meetings between the parties, the matter was finally settled at Dibrugarh on 10.10.1988.
